ALAMOGORDO

  • New Mexico Museum of Space History - Celebrating the spirit of exploration, their mission is to educate the people of New Mexico and visitors from around the world in the history, science and technology of space, while honoring the efforts of those who have advanced our understanding of the universe.   • White Sands Missile Range Museum- At the White Sands Missile Range museum you can trace the origin of America's missile and space activity, find out how the atomic age began and learn about the accomplishments of scientists like Dr. Wernher von Braun and Dr. Clyde Tombaugh at White Sands. Displays also include the prehistoric cultures and the rip-roaring Old West found in southern New Mexico. The museum is open year-round. Admission is FREE. Hours on weekdays are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Closed holidays. The Missile Park is open dawn to dark seven days a week.   • White Sands National Monument, play area and museum - Surf the sand dunes made of gypsum. Great little museum about how the white sands developed, about the Chihuahuan Desert, and the animal and plant life of the dunes. Gift shop and food. Special events and programs every month.   • Petroglyph National Monument - Petroglyph National Monument protects a variety of cultural and natural resources including five volcanic cones, hundreds of archeological sites and an estimated 25,000 images carved by native peoples and early Spanish settlers. 3 miles north of I-40 on Unser.   • San Felipe de Neri Church - This Church was built in 1792,and still, the worshipers come. This church is a beautiful addition to Old Town. Albuquerque, NM (505) 243-4628
  • The Telephone Pioneer Museum of New Mexico - Search the "Alphabetical Index" for information about this cool museum concerning the history and technology of the telephone! Housed in a historical four story building dated back to 1906. Switchboards, teletype machines, phones, photographs and historical accounts of the telephone in New Mexico for the first 100 years of it's existence! Learning Center too! Visit by appointment. ANGEL FIRE

  • Vietnam Veterans National Memorial Chapel - Honor our courageous Veterans, and all those who died in Vietnam. Located 4 miles north of Angel Fire, NM on US 64. (505) 377-6900

ARTESIA

  • Artesia Historical Museum and Art Center - Located in the historic Moor-Ward cobblestone house, this museum features exhibits and displays relating to local and area history, including Native American artifacts, farming and ranching displays, information about the oil and gas industry, plus a restored, 1930s-era kitchen and children's room. 505 W.   • Historical Train Depot, Visitor Center and Southwest Dairy Museum - Built in 1912 as a passenger train depot, it now houses the Southwest Dairy Museum, with a fabulous interactive dairy display. New Mexico ranks 7th in the nation in milk production and contributes more than $1 billion to the New Mexico economy.   • Artesia's MainStreet - Heritage Plaza & Walkway, Derrick Floor and Pioneer Bronze Sculptures, and Historic Buildings - Artesia has invested more than $6 million in renovations since 1997. Stroll through a bustling downtown with huge storefront windows, renovated historic inns, restaurants and theaters. View larger-than-life bronze sculptures that pay homage to Sallie Chisum, the First Lady of Artesia, and the Derrick Floor, a huge bronze sculpture dedicated to the men and women who take the risks and do the work to find, produce and refine New Mexico oil and gas. Finally, stroll down to Heritage Walkway and catch a unique, mini-view of Artesia's history, colorfully created by local artists.

 

AZTEC

  • Aztec Museum and Pioneer Village - Takes you back into history as you stroll through and around numerous historic buildings, all reconstructed from original buildings in the area.   • The Belen Harvey House and Museum - Learn about Fred Harvey and his Harvey Girls while history comes alive in this fabulous place. Fred Harvey, known as the man who started fast food restaurants, knew that people traveling on trains in the old west would enjoy eating and sleeping in style. That's how the Harvey House began. BERNALILLO

  • El Zocalo (Abenicio Salazar Building) - This building, a former high school, was declared a historic site in 1980. Bernalillo, NM
  • Old Convent Building - Visit the convent that was built in 1875, and inhabited by the Sisters of Loretto. Bernalillo, NM

BLOOMFIELD

  • Salmon Ruins, Museum, and Research Library - Exhibits, artifacts and records found by the excavation of the Salmon Ruins. Available for your visit to Salmon Ruins are an 11th century Chacoan great house and an original 19th century homestead; replicas of a sweatlodge, hogans, tipis, and a pithouse for you to investigate; a museum exhibiting artifacts from the decade-long excavations of Salmon Ruins; a research library specializing in the archaeology and history of the American Southwest; and a unique gift shop offering a variety of books, Navajo weavings, quality silver jewelry, pottery, craft and kids items, and archaeological reference materials. CAPULIN

  • Capulin Volcano National Monument - Visit an actual volcano! Although extinct for 60,000 years, it would have been a much hotter trip then. On NM 325, 3.5 miles north of Capulin, NM (505) 278-2201
  • Folsom Museum - Here you can learn all about Folsom Man, the first accepted evidence of an ice age man. Located 13 miles north of Capulin, NM (505) 278-2122 in the summer, or (505) 278-3616 in the winter.

CARLSBAD

  • Carrizozo Heritage Museum - Telling stories of the residents of Carrizozo and surrounding area. A special place with a passion for the past, a heart in the present and an eye on the future. CERRILLOS

  • Cerrillos Turquoise Mining Museum - Located on the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway (NM State Highway 14) and housed in the Casa Grande Trading Post, this unique exhibit has antiques from the area, mining artifacts from the Cerrillos Mining District, displays on mining, rocks, minerals, bottles and dioramas. CHIMAYO

  • Chimayo Museum - Learn all about the history and culture of the Chimayo area. Located at the Plaza del Cerro, Chimayo, NM (505) 351-0945
  • El Santuario de Chimayo - Hear the story of the sacred crucifix and the healing powers it brought to Chimayo. The mysterious crucifix still sits on the altar. Located on CR 94C. Chimayo, NM (505) 351-4889

CHLORIDE

  • Pioneer Store Museum - Visit the Pioneer Store built in 1880, and closed after the silver boom with all the furnishings, merchandise, and records left inside. A fascinating and unique collection of life in the days of silver mining. Take the self-guided walk down Wall Street and see some great original buildings and the "hanging tree." Stay overnight in the first building in Chloride, or in the RV park. Located near the Gila Wilderness, just 42 miles northwest of Truth or Consequences via Interstate 25 and N.M. 52.   • Grafton Log Cabin - Built in the mid 1970s in the once silver mining town of Grafton, located in the Black Range Mountains, the cabin was rescued from vandals and the elements and became a historical museum in Las Cruces as a project to commemorate the Nation's Bi-centennial. After 30 years in Las Cruces the Grafton Cabin returns to Sierra County. It will now serve as an Interpretive Center and will display the history of Chloride, and the other six silver mining towns that have now disappeared. CIMARRON

  • St. James Hotel - Built as a saloon and later converted into a hotel, this historic site holds actual bullet holes from gunfights. Located on the corner of 7th and Collinson streets. Cimarron, NM (505) 376-2664
  • Villa Philmonte - You'll be amazed when you visit the summer home of oil man Waite Phillips. Built in 1926, the house still contains its original furnishings. Tours are available May through September. Cimarron, NM (505) 376-2281

CLAYTON

  • Black Jack Ketchum's Grave - Visit the gravesite of this train robber who hung in Clayton in 1901. Located in the Clayton cemetary on Princeton Ave. Clayton, NM

CLEVELAND

  • Cleveland Roller Mill Historical Museum - places on the National Register of Historic Places and the New Mexico Cultural Properties Register, the Cleveland Roll Mill was the last merchant mill to be built in northern New Mexico. The completely restored mill is operated for the public during the Labor Day weekend at the Annual Cleveland Millfest. CLOUDCROFT

  • Sacramento Mountains Historical Society Museum - Historic buildings, late 1800s-early 1900s. Old-time farming, ranching tools, equipment; many artifacts depicting the history of early living in Cloudcroft and the Sacramentos including the first water pump for the village and the RR history for the logging business that grew Alamogordo! COLUMBUS

  • Pancho Villa State Park - The customs house, build in 1902, is now the Pancho Villa State Park visitor center, with exhibits describing the histories of Pancho Villa, the Columbus raid of 1916, and Pershing's Punitive Expedition. CROWNPOINT

DEMING

  • Deming Luna Mimbres Museum - Terrific museum! Military history includes Fort Cummings (1863), Camp Cody (WWI), Deming Army Air Base (WWII) and a memorial to heroes of Bataan Death March. A new section honors local participants of those times and of more recent actions. Other exhibits include the original Custom House (located across the street), Hispanic room, a wonderful doll room, an art gallery, antique autos, a collection of unique bottles of all shapes and sizes, Harvey House, and a fine collection of Mimbres Indian pottery and more. 301 S.   • Historic Walking Tour - Walk through Deming's downtown commercial buildings which retain much of their historic integrity and remain part of an historic zone. KINGSTON

  • Historic Percha Bank in Kingston - Known as the gem of the Black Range, Kingston was the largest city in New Mexico - in 1890! At the height of its silver mining boom, the population of Kingston topped 7,000 folks, beating Albuquerque by about 1,000. In its heyday, numerous hotels played host to the likes of President Grover Cleveland, Mark Twain, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Black Jack Ketchum, and, of course, Billy the Kid. There were stage lines, 23 saloons, a bank, 14 grocery and general stores, 3 newspapers, a brewery and an opera house. Today, only a few buildings remain such as the Pretty Sam's Casino, which is now the Black Range Lodge Bed and Breakfast; the old Assay Office, which is a private residence; The Percha Bank and Post Office. The bank now has a lovely museum open to the public. Donations are gratefully accepted. LAKE ARTHUR

  • Lake Arthur Educational Museum - Lake Arthur, with no lake, at 3,366 altitude and population 367, is eight miles south of Hagerman. Research has provided little information about its origin, but in 1977 it received attention because of the Rubio family. On October 5, as Mrs.Rubio was preparing burritos for her husband's lunch, an image of Jesus Christ appeared on a flour tortilla.   • Kit Carson Home and Museum - Christopher "Kit" Carson ran away from Missouri to end up in Taos and become one of the great frontiersman of our time. He was a translator for a wagon train to Chihuahua, a trapper and mountain man, traveling extensively throughout the West. His real fame grew through serving as scout for the scientific and mapping expeditions of John C. Fremont. From 1854 until 1861, Carson served as an Indian Agent. In 1861, Carson began the final stage of his career as a military officer, first in the Civil War and later in the army campaigns of the Indian Wars. The Kit Carson Home and Museum contains a portion of Carson's original home. Artifacts and exhibits illustrate the life story of Carson, his family and the character of frontier life in Taos. WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE
